7 drones that can lift heavy weights [2017 Edition]

Have you been looking for a drone capable of lifting heavy cameras and other objects? So have we. Fortunately technology has developed to a point which drones no longer are fragile machines incapable of lifting heavier objects. If you think your heavy photographing camera can’t be carried by a drone in air, I’m happy to tell you that you are wrong.

There is a drone out there capable of lifting your camera, allowing you to take the best of the very best aerial footage. Many professionals and even amateurs are already using them. Drones are not limited to GoPros (Best drones for GoPro) and other action cameras. Your Canon, your Nikon, or any other high-end photography and videography camera can be used to take the best photos and record the best videos without any hassle.

But such powerful drones are not just limited to cameras, they are also capable of carrying other heavy objects. Today we bring to you five of the best heavy lifting drones in the market, up to 20kgs some of these beauties are much more powerful than you could have thought possible. Let’s have a deeper look into these powerful machines and unveil their amazing features and specifications.

Frequently asked questions :

How much weight can a drone carry?

I’m sure most of you are well-aware of the fact that mainstream drones cannot really lift a lot. Perhaps they can hold the weight of an action camera and gimbal, but that’s about it. Come to think of it, I remember when I bought my first drone and wanted to put in a larger (more powerful, obviously) battery inside, only to realise my drone couldn’t liftoff due to the extra couple of grams onboard.

However, drones for commercial purposes can often lift impressive weights… but they also do cost couple of times more than their mainstream counterparts. So, don’t be too surprised when you see drones listed below with more than 10 or even 15 kilograms of lifting power. All those drones are outstanding machines built specifically for precise flight and heavy lifting.

What are the biggest perks of heavy-lifter drones?

If you are wondering what exactly can you accomplish with one of these drones, well the answer is quite simple actually. You see, these heavy-lifting drones (as their name suggests) excel at one thing and one thing only – lifting heavy objects and carrying them from point A to point B. So, their uses range from professional aerial photography, agriculture, surveillance, fishing to a wide array of additional ones which we won’t go into today.

Best uses of drones that can lift heavy weights

As I already explained above, the biggest (and virtually the only real advantage over conventional drone models) perk of such drones is their ability to lift heavy objects. It’s as simple as that! Like it was ever going to be something else… What I am primarily aiming at here is definitely the imaging capability this brings into play. You see, while most “premium” mainstream models on the market can barely lift an action camera along with its respective gimbal, these high-powered drones are able to lift half of one’s professional photography gear. This includes a state-of-the-art stabilisation system as well as a fully-fledged DSLR camera that takes aerial images and videos to a whole another level.

But, besides being excellent at carrying huge chunks of photography equipment, these drones are also great for a plethora of other things. One of them includes high-tech fishing. SImply strap on a payload release mechanism and get your string through it and viola… now you’re able to drop it in the middle of a lake and hope for better results.

Additionally, heavy lifting drones can also be used for scientific studies and even for military purposes as well. Both of these usage scenarios tend to require somewhat of a solid lifting force and that’s where conventional drones usually fail. However, by using one of these heavy lifting models, both scientists and army generals can be sure their missions will end up as successful.

Last but not least, there is a good chunk of heavy lifting drones made specifically for agriculture. They come with innovative storage tanks which allow you to fully customise your fertilisation process and do it in the most hi-tech way known to mankind.

P.S. This list includes ONLY drones available on Amazon.

*Drones on this “Heavy lift drones” list can be used for photography and videography, agriculture, mapping, and many other industrial purposes due to their high durability and heavy lifting capacity. For commercial drones, check our list : Best drones for sale 2017.

3. DJI Spreading Wings S1000

DJI never ceases to amaze us with their exceptionally well-built drones. This is especially true for their S1000 octocopter which represents a proper powerhouse in their lineup.

It is specially designed for lifting extremely heavy payloads, making it effective across a wide array of scenarios. More precisely, the S1000’s maximum takeoff weight is 11kgs.

Taken into consideration the weight of the unit itself which is roughly 4kgs and we get to the final number which is 7. In other words, you can mount a maximum of 7kgs on this bad boy and expect it to lift it high up in the air… where it can stay for roughly 15 minutes while carrying maximum payload weight. Its 2 kilometers of range are no joke either, clearly justifying its relatively high price.

Of course, you can mount a number of motorized gimbals on it, including the Zenmuse Z15 that will, when combined with the Cannon 5D Mark III, give you the best possible aerial photography platform currently available on the market. It works with plenty of professional transmitters too, but for the best results, we warmly recommend DJI’s A2 which is guaranteed to work perfectly, even if one of the rotors stops working in midair.

Moreover, there’s no need to tell you about how awesome this beast looks. But, in addition to its great looks, S1000 also has the perks in terms of retractable landing gear, foldable wings, OSD and DJI Lightbridge digital video downlink feature. All things considered, if you are thinking of running a successful aerial photography business, you simply cannot steer away from this drone.

ut that’s not the only great thing about this model, it’s its work rate and efficiency that sets it aside from its competitors (if there are any). Believe it or not, this drone can get the job done 50 times faster than manual spraying, making it a great investment that will definitely pay off in the long run.

You must have lots of questions regarding this model, such as How can it spray that fast? How does it know how much to spray and where? How much land can it cover? Well, here are a couple of answers to some of those questions. First of all, it can spray that fast due to its mixture of power and agility. As we already said above, it is able to carry up to 10kgs of liquid payloads and can spray an area of 4,000-6,000 square meters in a matter of 10 minutes. That’s approximately 7-10 acres per hour which is absolutely crazy, especially when compared to the traditional ways.

Very interesting to see that the technology is finally there. As I've read elswhere film producers will be pleased that these new flying robots can replace the costly helicopters and crane crews. I can't wait to see more movie scenes being filmed by drones 🙂

Cheers

I am wondering if there our drones that can carry a fishing line and drop it. Sorry I can't find any other place to ask.

4

check it on YT University. I saw a video just last week where the guy had a bobber on a line on his Drone.

5

We are exploring using a drone(s) in a high volume construction application to pick - carry - place in sequence an approximately 6\kg concrete brick in short distance from pickup to placement.

This would replace a robotic arm and it's operator.

Has large quantity requirement.

Please advise feasibility and if logical best manufacturer to explore details.

Thx
